Fieldwork starts!

Today is the start of fieldwork and it has been all go with preparing equipment. There is a lot that goes into planning for fieldwork and a good rule of thumb that a past Flinders lecturer once told me is “two is one, one is none”—so always have backups! Being in a remote location with no access to general supplies, you need to make sure you carry extra batteries, clothes, food and water. This is especially true for Rangitoto Island. The island may seem small on maps, but it is in fact deceivingly large and remote in parts. The weather isn’t looking good this coming week with 100 kmph winds expected in Auckland tonight. This will make things tougher, but on the bright side it will mean fieldwork will be that little more exciting! /KB
